St. David’s Church, Llanddewi

St David’s Church was built by the 14th century Bishop of St David’s, Henry de Gower. The church is considered wonky because the chancel is inclined to the south and is not in line with the nave.

There have been many theories over the years as to why this is the case. Some suggest that it was a deliberate attempt to remind worshippers that when Christ was crucified he leant his head to one side. Others suggest the builders couldn’t agree on the direction of true east! Or perhaps the chancel and the sanctuary may have been built at different times.
